Om loppet
The Tour de Romandie is a etapplopp which is part of the UCI World Tour. It runs through the Romandie region, or French-speaking part of Switzerland. The competition began in 1947, to coincide with the 50-year anniversary of Swiss Cycling. It was held without interruption until the COVID-19-pandemin caused the cancellation of the 2020 edition.
The course of the race usually heads northwards towards the Jurajorden and Alperna mountain ranges of western Switzerland. The race traditionally starts with an individuell tidsköring prologue and ends with an individual time-trial in hilly terrains, often in Lausanne. Tidskörningen slutligen traditionellt startar i stadionen norr om Lausanne, går nedför söderut till Lake Léman (Lake Geneva), och gör sitt sätt tillbaka uppför till stadionen igen. Vinnaren och flera av de tio bästa slutplaceringarna är vanligtvis utmärkta tidskörar.
Fyra vinnare av Tour de Romandie hade gått vidare för att vinna Tour de France samma år; Stephen Roche år 1987, sedan Cadel Evans, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome år 2011, 2012 och 2013, respektive.
Tour de Romandie anses också vanligtvis vara ett förberedelslopp för Giro d’Italia, som startar en vecka senare.
År 2022 hölls Tour de Romandie Féminin för första gången i UCI Women’s World Tour – som del av 75-årsjubileet för loppet.
